Baila Goldenthal : Paintings : Alphabet Series |

Alphabet Series (1997-98) is an open-ended exploration of the emotional symbolism the artist finds in our alphabet. Here, process becomes even more integrated with meaning. Each letter is interpreted on an emotional level. It is photographed, laser copied, cut out, assembled with other letters, and altered or enhanced to form 'words'. They are then glued on wood panels in such a way as to contribute to the emotional impact of the word itself. Here is a kind of metamorphosis from 'letter' to 'word', a further exploration into relationships. The paintings were originally inspired by Maurya Simon's poem "Spellbound" from her book "Speaking in Tongues" which presents a separate poem/meditation on each of the twenty six letters of the alphabet. |
